Happy Veteran’s Day, gang. We were debating on which service-related comics to review today (and we had a couple of ideas) but we remembered an awesome program we learned about from one of our earliest readers (@MegGoneGeek). Read on about Operation Gratitude, and how you can send comics to our troops.

Deadly Class is Kill Bill meets Dazed and Confused meets Saved By The Bell. Did you hear that? Highly-trained, deadly teens attending an assassin high school get into wacky hi-jinks. But instead of ruining a dance off at The Max… well, you know… what assassins do. With a Remender story and Wes Craig’s beautiful art Deadly Class is one of my favorite titles of the year. Find out why after the jump.
Image Comics once again hits a grand slam with their release of Tooth & Claw. Lobo is back and and Gotham Academy is killing it. Check out this weeks picks of the week. At least one of them will tickle your fancy.
It’s that time again, one of pop culture’s most beloved franchises is making waves with a new movie and subtitle. Star Wars: The Force Awakens was announced today, and we’ve grabbed a diverse range of fan (or non-fan) reactions from Twitter, Reddit and Star Wars’ Facebook page. You know, wretched hives of scum and villainy. Let’s take a look at the wide-range of reactions from The Internet.
This past weekend we had the pleasure of attending Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, which bills itself as the “first and largest pop culture convention in Los Angeles.” Not sure how they came up with those statistics, but whether or not they are the first or largest, we really enjoyed it. Since it’s hosted by Stan Lee, you’d think it’d be a comic-first convention, but it was definitely a pop culture smorgasbord with comics, video games, cosplay, anime, tv and film.
Cosplay and comic conventions go hand in hand. Every year, the cosplay community gets bigger, broader and crazier. Stan Lee’s Comikaze was no exception. People from all around the world traveled to L.A. to share their love for the art of cosplay. Expressing oneself through costume is no easy task. Weeks, if not months, of work were required to create some of the most awesome costumes you’ll ever see in person. But most people from all walks of life don’t cosplay to create best costume in the room, they cosplay because they’re able to express themselves and feel empowered in a community that holds no judgment. The Shortboxed team was able to snap some photos of these awesome cosplayers. Check it out after the jump and let us know which one is your favorite in the comments or on twitter.
If you’re like the Shortboxed staff, we have a lot of free time now that baseball has ended. Perfect. More time for comics. This week, we’ve managed to avoid superhero comics and instead have a trio of sci-fi titles. Sit down, and get ready to enjoy Brian K. Vaughn’s favorite Image title of the year, the broken future of mankind, and The Matrix meets What Dreams May Come this week… on Weekend Shorts.
