December 30 / / Comics

2015 has been a great year for comics – we got two reboots from Marvel and DC, Image kept pumping out winners, and some of the best series from 2014 kept going strong.

It’s also been a great year for Shortboxed! We managed to hit lots of cons up and down the California coast, made it up to Seattle for Emerald City Comic Con, visited some comic book shops overseas, and we got to attend the mecca for comic book geeks, San Diego Comic-Con. We also added another member to the Shortboxed crew this year, Jeremy, who’s been crushing it with his reviews and opinion pieces! All this on top of reading some amazing stories from our favorite creators this year! So thank you to all of our readers and followers on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook for allowing us to geek out with you and connect over this passion of ours.

Black Science is an epic science fiction adventure, spanning multiple parallel dimensions with the most unique creatures and landscapes seen in comics today. Written by Rick Remender, with pencils by Matteo Scalera, colors by Dean White and letters by Rus Wooten, this is a gorgeous and action-packed book that will delight any sci-fi fan.

In the distant future, Grant McCay, leader of the Anarchist League of Scientists, unlocks “black science,” which allows him and his team of Dimensionauts to hop back and forth across dimensions, or so that’s the plan. Of course, nothing ever goes according to plan, otherwise we’d have a very boring story. The “pillar,” which is the tool that allows them to hop between dimensions, has been sabotaged and now the team has to deal with unpredictable jumps between dimensions – they have no idea when they will jump, where they will end up, or what types of worlds and creatures they’ll run into. You can already imagine how many things can go wrong and how many unexpected turns things could take if you’re at the whim of random dimension-jumps.

December 16 / / Marvel

The 2nd volume of the Inhuman series written by Paul Jenkins and illustrated by Jae Lee consists of 12 issues. It’s wildly rumored that the upcoming 2018 Marvel movie will be roughly based on this story line. Though we have no real information regarding the movie, the similarities between the fonts displayed at the #MarvelEvent and the titles of the volume 2 issues are uncanny. It also may just be a coincidence. But we’ll have to wait to at least the teaser trailer to even get an inkling. Though the trailer itself is probably 2 years away. Ugh! Anyways, read our review to see what it MAY be about.

deathstroke_cover

Deathstroke #1 from DC Comics kicks off a new solo series for “the world’s greatest mercenary” that anyone can jump into without any prior knowledge of continuity. It’s not an origin story, but instead throws readers right into action with Slade Wilson (Deathstroke) narrating along and giving readers a glimpse into his mind. It’s a very action-filled issue with lots of bloody fight scenes, so if you like your action fast paced and gory, give this premiere issue a read.  Pick it up at your LCS or at tfaw.com

Check out the rest of our weekend picks after the jump.
