Take a break from the hectic week and cozy up this weekend with our picks of the week. A little DC, a little Marvel and a bit of time travel. All awesome! Let us know what you think in the comments below or on twitter.
Deathstroke #1 from DC Comics kicks off a new solo series for “the world’s greatest mercenary” that anyone can jump into without any prior knowledge of continuity. It’s not an origin story, but instead throws readers right into action with Slade Wilson (Deathstroke) narrating along and giving readers a glimpse into his mind. It’s a very action-filled issue with lots of bloody fight scenes, so if you like your action fast paced and gory, give this premiere issue a read. Pick it up at your LCS or at tfaw.com
Check out the rest of our weekend picks after the jump.
Next week is Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo, and the Shortboxed crew will be there covering the entire con! We’ll be doing interviews, attending panels, talking to artists and exhibitors, photographing cosplayers and doing daily giveaways, so be sure to follow us on Twitter and Instagram both at @shortboxed. We’ll also be updating the blog with daily recaps of the con. While the show may be hosted by Stan Lee and called “Comikaze,” it’s not just a comic book convention – it’s billed as a pop culture convention, which includes comics, video games, sci-fi, fantasy, horror, tv, film and everything in between. The problem with big pop culture conventions is that it can be difficult for comic book enthusiasts and creators to sift through all the noise to find content for themselves – so we did it for you.
Eben E.B. Burgoon is the co-creator of “Eben07: Covert Custodian,” a Spy vs Spy kindred spirit webcomic about the janitors who clean the wreckage left behind by the Bonds and Archers of the spy world , and now is focused on his new project, B-Squad: Soldiers of Misfortune, which follows a poor man’s A-Team as they attempt to survive ludicrous, suicide missions.
The old adage of blaming the last guy won’t work in this pre-apocalytic political and sci-fi thriller. As the new president, Stephen Blades must bear the weight of a 7 year secret his predecessor has left him. The answer to the ultimate question, “Is there life out there?” is answered. And the answer is a resounding yes. And the worse part, they’re most likely not friendly.
I’m really digging the writing, art and creative style of creator Rich Foster. His ability to convey a strong, immersed short story that is ‘Red Giant: The Baron Goes Hunting’ is promising. It opens up a world in which most readers would desire more issues. I sure do.
Shortboxed was able to snag some time from Eisner Award-nominated, New York Times Bestselling author Cullen Bunn. Bunn has worked on numerous titles of characters you might be familiar with: Magneto, Captain America, Superman, Wolverine, Deadpool, Spider-Man, to name just a few. Bunn also is writing several acclaimed non-superhero projects, notably – The Sixth Gun. We pick Cullen’s brain in this week’s Industry Interview (which is what we’re calling this now).
