Recommended Reading: ‘Saga’ Review

Star Wars meets Romeo and Juliet meets Game of Thrones. That may sound like a lot to take in, but Saga is a lot of things, and that’s what makes it such a captivating story.

Saga, written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples, is an epic space fantasy that follows a young family throughout the universe as they try to escape two warring planets that are also out to find and kill them. You see, Alana and Marko are from these two planets that are at war with each other, and the fact that they are in love and had a child with each other challenges the status quo and can throw the very foundation of the long-running war off balance, shifting the political landscape for generations to come. Alana and Marko are simply trying to live their lives and raise their newborn baby girl Hazel, all while escaping hired assassins sent to kill them and going through the trials of being first time parents.

Saga is an incredibly fun read that brings you to multiple worlds and introduces you to some of the most ridiculous characters imagined – like a royal family with TVs for heads and a talking cat that knows when you’re telling a lie. Brian K. Vaughan’s storytelling makes the entire universe feel like a real place rich with history, full of emotional characters you can relate to. Of course, it would be hard to imagine without the rich, stylish artwork of Fiona Staples – she brings the pages to life with detailed lines and muted tones that make the pages feel vast, with a good mix of sci-fi, fantasy and mythology inspired characters that stick with you long after you close the book.

Saga is for anyone who loves stories rooted in vast worlds with rich histories, imaginative and emotional characters, and plot twists at every corner, all set within an epic space fantasy backdrop.

Does this get Shortboxed?

Not only does Saga get Shortboxed, it’s so good that I would keep two copies of every issue in it, just in case. It’s a series I expect to read again in the future.
